LO4: Final Images Explained

"The Shrill Establishment"
The name of this photo"The Shrill Establishment" This denotes the a signature Sheffield building called the cheese grater. The word shrill is another word for grater. An establishment is another word for building. This can also connote the use of the building this being used for. I believe this photo shows this building as modern. This photo shows of the city centre of Sheffield this use of metal connotes the city of steel. The low angle shot shows the dominance of the building. This linking with the word establishment which can be considered as big organisations.

"Contradiction Of Society"
The name of this photo "Contradiction Of Society" This denotes the newly made HSBC buildings next the old abandoned building that is under construction. This is highlighted through the difference in colour of the two buildings. I believe this connotes the difference in society as the new modern bank branch is large and superior compared to the other. This is also connoted by the photo being mostly showing the new HSBC building compared towards the old shop. This photo connotes how we are coming into a new age of the world with large economy based buildings are being created replacing the old history that was there before.

"Neglected And Empty"
In this photo this denotes a window of a abandoned building. In this window there is the faded sign of what the building was used for. This building had been boarded up and vandalised by graffiti and has had its banner half pulled down. The fact that it is boarded up and connotes that it is neglected meaning it has been left to rot. The fact it is abandoned makes the building empty as all of its belongings such as furniture has been taken.

"Tavern On The Hill"
In this photo there is an abandoned tavern. I have called this photo "Tavern On The Hill" I have called the photo this name because this photo denotes the tavern in a diagonal way across the photo. This angle makes the tavern look extremely large and powerful. This can connote the importance of what the buildings once was. This being a beacon to of community around the area.

"Danger! Keep Out"
In this photo there is a low angle shot of an abandoned building that has been locked away and boarded up and plastered with keep out signs. These keep out signs all say the same message of keep out and do not enter because there is danger. This being a reason why I called this photo "Danger! Keep Out" In editing this photo I made the metal boarder look colder. This to make the signs stand out a revamp the message and make the the exclamation marks more visible as it makes the signs clearer.

"Deserted Hangout"
In this photo there is a abandoned building that was used for people to live in. This is old centre where people would sit around and live. This building has been boarded up and left to be demolished. Another word for this being deserted. The colour of this building was a orange colour to enhance this I changed the temperature and situation to makes the building stand out and colour match with the sky.

"Not Up To Speed"
This photo is called "Not Up To Speed" I called this photo this name because in this photo there speed sign and a abandoned building along with it. This connotes the building's quality is not up to standard and can be considered behind any other buildings. This considered as slow. Because the sign  is showing 20 MPH that speed is considered as slow connoting that this building is even further behind any building in the city as it is abandoned.

"Saddened City"
In this photo there is a mainly glass building surrounded by old brick buildings. The photo is considered Sadden because the colour of the rest of the buildings are dark, this connotes sadness. However city qualities are still within this photo as the bright blue modern building is still shining and is the main attraction of the photo.

"Forgotten Palace"
In this photo there is a low angle shot of an abandoned mansion that was a home to a wealthy family. The fact that the photo is a low angle photo this makes the building have important connotations as the mansion look extremely large. This makes the building bigger than it is making the house look like a palace. The fact that this building has been left after being midway through demolishing makes the building feel abandoned.

"Luminescence Institution"
This building in this photo is a university building and a university building can be considered as institution of learning as it has various qualities that help people learn. whilst editing I changed the shadows and the highlight to make the sky and setting darker whilst making the light brighter and have a gold element. This illuminates the sky as the only bright aspect to this dark photo. This connoting a contrast of dark and light.

LO4: Evidence Of Editing

Selecting Final Images
Contact sheet of my photos I am considering for my final ten.

Final 10.

Adding Metadata

These are some screenshots of what I did when I needed to add metadata to my final 10 images. After opening Adobe Photoshop and then choose my final ten images. I then clicked the file info command. In this I changed the name of my image and the author of the file. I added the copyright symbol in my title. This copyrighted these photos I own. I added metadata for all the rest of my photos. I have used various techniques such as increasing the highlights and the decrease in shadows. These makes the building pop and the blacks in the photo darker and clearer.

LO3: Edited Images

My camera settings I used to take these photos was a canon 2000d with a traditional 18-35 mm lens. I controlled my photos by changing the aperture and the shutter speed. I had a fast shutter speed and a low aperture setting of which allows more light to go through the camera, this creates a shallow Depth of Field, this is an unconventional method as I wanted to create a different look to standard Landscape Photographers. The fact I have used a kit lens 18 - 55mm means this is hardly noticeable with a very mild medium DOF. This allowed a lot of light to go into the lens but not so much that it over exposed.

Editing

When taking these photos, I saw that the colour was too bland and the colours were not vibrant and eye catching, I want these photos to appear photographic but with elements of oil paintings, in reference to the brief I feel that of using Adobe Lightroom to adjust certain colours edit the curves and contrast give the images an industrial oil painted look. Through Adobe lightroom I adjusted the contrast and the highlights and the shadows. This made the darks very dark and allowed the other colours pop such as the sign in the photo I created with western tower in the background, I also added temperature changes to add to the atmosphere of the photos. For example, for the danger keep out photo I changed the temperature to a minus number to make the photo cooler as this is a cold unforgiving environment and I needed to accentuate this. However, I know that a lot of editing can lose the quality of the photo such adding noise to the photo and making the quality of the photo as the pixels have been adjusted losing the photo in the process. Having said this, people use editing to make the photo look clearer and more distinct by using the sharpening tool and curves tool. People use editing effects to create hyper realism and an ideal picture that people are excited by, this I feel is something I have achieved but with some elements of the original raw photograph. These adjustments in photoshop are vital to a photo just to clean up an original photo that is rough around the edges and editing polishes a photo making the image as professional as possible.

LO3: Photos Unedited

Whilst taking these photos I had my settings on Manual, so I could take full control of my camera. I had my settings on F4.5 and my shutter speed on 1/1000. This controls the amount of light coming into the lens, making sure my photos are not over exposed. I used a compact tripod to make sure the image is in perfect focus. I did not need lighting equipment because I was outside using natural light. I have broken rule of thirds and allowed the main object in the photo to take up most of the grids, this makes the object seem large and powerful. To save storage on my SD card I had to save my photos as JPEG as it allows to take multiple photos and have a choice. However I know quality is greater when taken in Raw but I chose the storage cautious option.

LO3: Evidence of taking photos

Contact Sheet:

Settings
These are photos I have taken some successful abandoned and modern building. 10 of these photos will be in my final 10 in my final collection. I used Adobe Bridge to find the settings I used whilst taking these photos. Also in adobe bridge I saw the type of camera I have and shows the equipment I was using whilst taking these photos. my ISO in this photo I had set on 1600 this adding a lot of light to the photo. With this ISO I have my shutter speed 1/1600 this controlling the light that comes into the sensor. This along with a high f stop.

Setting Up Files

This is a screenshot of my unedited images from all my photoshoots. All my photos are JPEG are Loosy file types but are high quality. Lossy files makes it easier for me to export and edit them easily. This makes it easier to upload to the internet and download it from the crowd. To make sure the quality is the best I need to change the resolution to 72.

LO2: Legal And Ethical Considerations

Where I am photography portfolio around abandoned buildings and modern buildings I must consider potential legal and ethical issues. If I find out the potential legal and ethical issues then I can avoid them and face potential trouble. I must look into the legal issues such trespassing and copyright. These are the keys ones as abandoned buildings are locked off, I do not want to be on owners land when I am not supposed to be.

Legal issues

  • Trespassing - When I am taking photos of an abandoned building I will have to make sure the distance from and the building is not too close as I could be on land I am not allowed to be on. If there are gates towards the place I cannot go over these gates as that would be illegal to do as it endangers me and cannot go inside the building.
  • Copyright - Allows me to control how my work is used. This protects my content I have created. This limits people to using my content in a way that is inappropriate. To avoid this I will create Metadata to make sure that my content is known to be my own. This makes my name known as I it will be on my own.
  • Consent - If I was to use these photos and gain profit from these photos I would need to have written consent forms from the people in the photos. If I do not create the
  • Public documentation - It is legal to take photographs in public places.
  • Breaking these laws will result in the work being taken down and being sued for the revenue of the photo.

Ethical Issues
  • Places in photos - Some of these photos will feature abandoned buildings. Some these buildings will be privately owned. I will need to find out where I can or can't shoot. I will need to see from the owner if I am allowed to take photos there
  • People In the photos - As some of the modern buildings are university buildings I will probably have university student in the background. I will make sure they are represented as a typical student as they will add to the photo.
Before all my shoots I will address these issues before taking these photos. I will do this to make sure I do not have any trouble after these photos are taken. The main issue for myself is being on private property. To avoid legal trouble I will email the land owner to ask him for permission to take photos on his land. I will also provide forms such as location release forms and Reece sheets and call sheets.

LO2: Planning A Photographic Shoot

Rationale

The name of your photographic portfolio and connotations.

The name of my photographic portfolio is 'Building's Evolution Through The Years' I have chosen this title as it gives a sort of biological term to an object. This can be seen as personifying buildings showing how they grow and age by showing new and old buildings. When someone sees my portfolio they will see the transition between the buildings and like the building is going on a journey.

Who has Inspired your ideas?

My ideas have heavily been inspired by the photographer Mark Hadden and there work he has done on his portfolio website. I am put a different spin on his work as I'm including older buildings to link it to my name of my portfolio. I following his landscape style making sure the building is the main subject of the photo. I use different angles of the building to show different perspectives.

What style of photography will I use?

I am going to use landscape and architecture photography. the reason I am combining these two types of photography is because I want to create the idea to the viewer of what our world once was through these photos of the new and old buildings. This will make the viewer question what will our buildings look like In the next 10 years.

What purpose is you collection going to fulfil?

I want my collection to make people think how far us as engineers and designer have come through the years and what the world will look like in 10 years, such as will out buildings be fully glass or will a new material take over?
